Let me start by saying I am a high volume shipper with the US Postal Service. The service provided in their Priority Mail service beats the pants off both UPS and Fed Ex.
We have all at some point in our lives made fun of the US Post Office ( including myself) but to be honest with you, I find 99% of Postal Workers to be very hard-working and friendly people. Just think about how hard it is to drag around a 60lb sack of mail around every single day and hand out thousands of letters. Thus, it pains me deeply to see a pretty good organization on the verge of bankruptcy.
What I find even more incredible is the outpouring of lame excuses from our Government officials via TV commercials / media interviews blaming the internet for the reduction in first class mail thus causing the losses at the Post Office. I wonder if the CEO of UPS or Fed Ex would ever stand up at their annual shareholders meeting, blaming the reduction of software / cd delivery on I-tunes and still have their job by the end of the hour?
There are many examples of how the US Government screws things up but in the case of the US Postal Service this is a “takes the cake” example.
The US Government should spin the entire US Postal service into a publicly held company in which each an every long-standing employee of the Postal Service would be given a combination of stocks / Stock options for their hard work and commitment, the US Government stops bleeding cash to float USPS, and the a real CEO comes in to run the business profitably.
The stock offering would also allow USPS to modernize their fleet and facilities to compete with would class freight companies like UPS and Fed Ex.
I am 99% confident that USPS can be immensely profitable making it a good investment for anybody.
