I have always tried to maintain an objective mind and formulate my own opinions in life. As an American gun owner there has been a lot of buzz and rumor floating around about the UN ATT ( UN Small Arms Treaty ) which is supposed to be signed by the 193 participating member of the UN tomorrow July 27th.
After some searching on the internet I have found a link to the published and proposed UN ATT that I think everybody should read:
After reading the document I have some very mixed feelings about how any one country would sign this document and particularly the United States.
The global arms control document reads like it just wants to limit guerrilla warfare but I have a different take on it.
As it relates to the United States gun owners……a national gun registration database that would be shared with the international community. Besides the obvious invasion of privacy….any Marshall Law scenario as a result of natural disaster or domestic disturbance would give the military, national guard, or local law enforcement a list of gun owners in that area. I doesn’t take a leap of the imagination to see what can happen next.
Some of the finer points of the UN treaty have yet to be ironed out. One of these points relates to ammunition. The treaty could effectively limits the transfer of ammunition from one foreign country to another without strict oversight. If this were to become part of the treaty it could potentially limit or eliminate the importation of foreign made ammunition. Since a very large percentage of ammunition is made in Russia, a resulting import ban could result in a national shortage of .223 (Ar15 Round) , 7.62 x 39 ( the AK47 round), 9mm ( the bulk of pistols) and .308 (hunting / sniper rounds) here in the US, Effectively this could be translated as a de-leveraging of so called ‘Assault Weapons”.
Potentially many of the pro gun control activists will herald this as something great. But I wonder if people truly understand what this means…..
The Arab Spring ( like it or not) was not accomplished with banner toting free rights people staging sit ins. Freedom in the middle east for many came at the point of the AK47. If this weapons ban were in place, the chance of the Arab Spring ever happening would be near zero.
The so called “Freedom Fighters” in Syria would run out of ammunition and be slaughtered.
The term Freedom Fighter would be eliminated because overthrow of dictators and military junta’s would not exist. Essentially the UN would decide whether to invade a country to free it’s oppressed people.
World history has nearly always shown that the road to freedom has been paved in blood and the road to tyranny has always come from a population unable to stand up of defend itself.
There has got to be a better way.
I welcome your opinions
