I was deep in thought today and realized that it’s been a while since I’ve had a good Primal Scream.
For those of you not familiar with the term I tried looking it up on google with no good definition available. Looking up the definition of primal offered this: of first importance; fundamental
Primal Scream is not Jokers war face from Full Metal Jacket. It’s his war face!
People that hunt game are most familiar with this term before taking down their prey. It’s the combined point of spirituality, enhanced calmness, being at one with nature and making the kill. The following scream or cheer is truly primal with the feeling being diluted by nothing else.
Athletes know the term as being in “The Zone”. Focused and knowing victory will come to you. Tim Tebow was definitely in “The Zone” when he threw the single touchdown pass that defeated the Steelers int he playoffs last year.
For me, many internal primal screams came when I skied my first Double Diamond on Lake Tahoe and nailed it! Or when I caught me record snapper while fishing in Guantanamo Bay in Cube (22 lbs). Mostly though, the primal screams have come through business and personal success.
In March I closed a business deal for about $600K and last month another one for $480K but yet, with slam dunking these sales ( a large sale in my company is about $50K) , I had no inclination to stand up and shout. Today I was wondering why and I came this conclusion.
Victories these days are pretty hard to come by. Pressure to perform comes from many different directions all at once. So much is going on all the time, that the one important thing you just did and kicked ass on, is diluted by the next thing on your list, posting it on facebook or tweeting it out. How diminishing this really is.
So with a sense of purpose and starting at this very moment I’m on the hunt for my next Primal Scream.
Won’t you join me?
