So there is a lot of news floating around about unemployment and underemployment. Virtually nobody talks about the unemployable segment of the population which continues to grow exponentially and continues to perpetuate the entitlement society.
Let me preface this post with some math. If you work at a job earning $38K/year in a state with no tax you take home pay is roughly $2000 monthly after taxes. If you hunt really for a place to live and buy a $50K condo somewhere a rough payment would be $600/month all in. A basic reliable car payment would be $350/month all in. So darn near half of your salary would go to transportation and housing.
That being said if you are extremely frugal you would be able to eek out an existence at this level.
Since the financial collapse that started in 2006 and got into full swing in 2007 many companies have spent the last 5 years leveraging technology to replace the human worker and thus maintain profitability or at the very least returning to it.
At the most basic job level like fast food or telemarketing, companies like this have virtually eliminated the need for an individual to think. Push the #1 with a coke for the meal. Get the name, phone number and email address while talking to customer service. These are minimum wage jobs all.
I have personally witnesses people staffing these jobs that have graduated that could literally not count change. In the last 3 months I’ve witnessed a person that not make change for a $9.73 food bill when handed a $10. Another person when closing a register that did not know how many dime we’re in a dollar and thus could not derive the dollar amount from 53 dimes. Lastly, an 8 year old that had obviously busted open the piggy bank to pay for $27 in Legos while in line at Walmart. The cashier took 35 minutes to count the money and I would have jumped into another line except for the fact that I was fascinated how long it took the person to count the money.
Fast forward to right now where people that exist in the workforce have to learn new skills virtually daily. Technology marches forward and breakneck speed and the uneducated and unskilled graduating from out public schools system will hardly stand a fighting chance.
As an entrepreneur, I continually look for people to hire but at the same time I also find myself mentally saying “I’d never hire this person!”
Vocational training hardly exists these days, students in school are taught to “pass the test”, math, science and history come right after gym or band.
If this isn’t an on fire emergency in this country I don’t know what else is. Our Government will never solve this problem, Thus it is up to our churches and knowledgeable people to seek people out like this and stimulate their thought process before it’s too late.
Last thing we need here is a huge voting age demographic of people vote for a candidate based on what he will give them for free.
